What is Remediation?

Remediation is the act of temporarily neutralizing mold and other contaminants found in poor-quality material, using methods like ozone and irradiation, in order to make the product saleable/pass testing.

While Remediation has been around for decades in other industries, it has only been recently introduced into the cannabis and hemp industry; creating a variety of unintended challenges and issues for regulators and consumers.

We've provided a high-level oversight of the main challenges of this kind of remediation approach with raw/cured flower, and encourage you to do your own research and learn from the current available science.

Feel Free to read on and learn why the Remediation of Cured Flower is problematic, and how Certified Remediation Free is helping address the challenge.

Why Does This Matter For Cannabis?

At a high level, the challenge presented to cannabis when remediating with most of these technologies is two-fold:

1. When remediating flower, usually, only some of the mold is killed. Unable to be removed from raw flower, these dead organisms are left in the end product, unfit for smoking or consuming in general.

2. Most technologies only kill some of the mold, inhibiting the rest and putting it into a dormant state. This is usually OK for things like produce, which only has a shelf life of a couple weeks.

Unfortunately, with cannabis, often the final product sits on shelves for months before it's sold, and this inhibited mold comes back; causing failed labs once retested, and unsafe product in general.

This reality has been shown by recalls throughout multiple states, since some of these newer technologies introduction to the industry.

Besides these challenges, additional issues of diminished cannabinoid and terpene levels have been reported since the introduction of Remediation to Cannabis and Hemp, from both growers and labs.

WHY CRF?

Throughout the country, some states are not only allowing processors to hide the fact that their products are remediated on their labels, others are going so far as helping processors and farmers acquire the equipment to perform this remediation.

Seeing the writing on the walls, we realized how important it is that an independent, third-party organization exists, to provide  clarity for consumers who want to ensure they're choosing Cannabis products that have not been Remediated.
